Accessibility.
I am one person writing this site alone. With that in mind, I have tried to make sure it is accessible. Each page should meet these standards:
- To the XHTML 1.0 standard.
- To the CSS 2.0 standard.
- To meet the WCAG 1.0 Priority 2 standard.
You can find out more on these standards from the World Wide Web Consortium website. Web: http://www.w3.org
The website should be okay on standards compliant browsers. The original open source web design was for a resolution 800 by 600 pixels or higher. I have used a free service to check my slightly changed design works on a range of browsers. Web: http://www.browsershots.org
I do know of some possible problems:
- I have used the "longdesc" attribute within "img" tags in the HTML. But I haven't included a "d link" for description of images.
- I have shortened the left hand navigation links for the three levels. For example, I have indented the "talks" and "individual topics" links. But I have written then "talks", say, rather than "advanced talks".
I haven't solved these problems because:
- I am not yet up to speed with the design's use of CSS. It doesn't use tables for layout as I am used to. It doesn't allow a "d link" to stay inline with the picture. If this causes any special problems please let me know. Web: webmaster.shtml
- I have used the "title" attribute to give a longer description. Again, if this causes any special problems please let me know. Web: webmaster.shtml
I have also checked my wording on each page. I have used these services to make sure it is clear:
- "Drivel Defence" from the Plain English Campaign. Web: http://www.plainenglish.co.uk/
- The grammar and spelling checker in Microsoft Word 2002.
- The readability analyser in Microsoft Word 2002.
Please note that I have less control over the level of accessibility on my online diary. At present, the host does not seem to have an accessibility policy. If you do have any special problem please let me know. I will see what I can do:
